During the 1960s, Hewlett-Packard developed a bus system for connecting programmable instruments. This system was known as HPIB (Hewlett-Packard Interface Bus). Its popularity grew until it was universally adopted as the General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB) and remains a well-supported standard to this day.

ADLINK's GPIB interface solutions are delivered with complete software support, including a driver API set that is fully binary compatible with NI-488.2* driver. All programs written based on the GPIB-32.DLL library can be executed with the USB-3488A without any modification. The VISA library is also supported to ensure compatibility with applications utilizing VISA. Regardless if you are using VC++, VB, Delphi, LabVIEW*, or any other T&M ADEs. The ADLINK USB-3488A provides "Plug and Play" compatibility with all your existing applications.

The USB-3488A GPIB interface provides a direct connection between the USB port on a desktop or laptop computer to GPIB instrumention. With the USB-3488A GPIB interface and its USB Plug and Play feature, GPIB instruments can be connected and disconnected without having to shut down the computer. No external power supplies are necessary. The USB-3488A GPIB interface is equiped with a 2 meter USB cable that is USB 2.0 compliant.

The 3488 products are modern GPIB boards designed for fast bus transfers and maximum compatibility with Test & Measurement instruments. The LPCI-3488A is a new board suitable for 3.3V or 5V PCI busses and fully backward compatible with its predecessor, the PXI-3488.

These cards are fully compatible with existing GPIB-32.DLL, NI-488.2 and VISA based applications. This means that these cards can be used with major 3rd party software packages such as LabVIEW and Agilent TestExec.

Please see the Documents section for more detailed information.

The GPIB-Extender provides up to 5km GPIB bus extension using fibre optic cable and up to 200m with copper. The unit is ideal for applications involving data retrieval from instruments in electrically isolated test chambers or shielded rooms thanks to the complete electrical isolation that fibre connectivity affords. This isolation also reduces the risk of damage to expensive equipment caused by lightning strikes or other surges. The 4897 permits an expanded distributed GPIB network that can help synchronise measurements and reduce the number of PCs required in long distance applications.

These extra high quality IEEE 488 cables are designed for use in environments where a more rugged cable is needed to interconnect IEEE 488 (GPIB) instruments and devices. The cables are made up with heavy duty double shielded cable giving it superior immunity to interference, both received and transmitted. The cable is constructed with an EMI/RFI shield either side of the twisted pair signal cables. The connectors are die cast aluminium and will withstand a high degree of mechanical abuse as well as continuing the EMI/RFI shield right up to the connection point.
